MSU was founded on March 17, 1905, under the name of Fourth District Normal School, and like other normal schools from that period, the main purpose was to prepare teachers for the public school system. By 1985, MO State grew into the second largest public university in the state of Missouri, fact that started the numerous attempts to change the institution's name into Missouri State University, finally becoming part of the University of Missouri System in 2005.
The athletic teams from MSU are known as the Missouri State Bears, which participate in the Missouri Valley Conference, in all sports, except football, in which they compete in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, being best known for their achievements in football, basketball, volleyball and baseball.

The Missouri territory, which later became known as Springfield, was obtained by the United States of America, during the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The future site of the city was designated in 1829, by John Polk Campbell of Tennessee and the earliest settlers arrived in the area in 1830, being later followed by many others. In 1833, Green County was founded, being named in honor of Nathanael Greene, who was a major general of the Continental Army of Revolutionary War.
The town of Springfield was officially established in 1838, on February 18, and it was brought to national attention in 1858, when it became a stop on the stagecoach line, Butterfield Overland Mail, from Tipton, Missouri, to San Francisco. During the 2008 census, the population of Springfield, also known as The Queen City of the Ozarks, was estimated at a number of more than 150 000 inhabitants.
